SAM WAS BORN IN IPSWICH TO A FAMILY THAT WAS INGRAINED IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
From them he learnt the value of service through his great grandfather, who started the family business R.T.Edwards & Sons and later became a pastor, his great uncle Sir Llew Edwards who served as the Deputy Premier, Treasurer and later was Chair of World Expo ’88, his grandfather who worked tirelessly on the family business to employ hundreds of Queenslanders, to his dad who served in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Whilst completing his study at the University of Queensland, Sam took up hospitality work and stayed at it for 7 years – which has given him a passion for the issues and regulations needed to protect workers in this industry. Whilst Sam had always hoped to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the Australian Defence Force he was excluded for medical reasons (don’t worry he’s totally healthy!). After that knockback he took his first step into the political space and started working in an electorate office in Beenleigh.
Sam’s love of the Gold Coast was built up over years of family holidays, so after completing a dual degree in Science and Arts, majoring in Biomedical Science and Political Science respectively, his decision on where to build his life was clear. Sam made the move to the Gold Coast and took up his second political office role and became the media adviser for Stuart Robert MP – Federal Member for Fadden.
Since his move to the Gold Coast, Sam has been an active member of the community. He is a member of Rotary and the Labrador Community Garden where he regularly helps out at working bees and in fundraising. Sam also volunteers with the Paradise Point Meals on Wheels, serving the elderly residents in the evening.
When Sam was pre-selected for the seat of Bonney he left Mr Robert’s office and worked at the Labrador AFL Sports Club. He became the first Member of Parliament for the new seat of Bonney in late 2017. He is committed to serving his community and was appointed Shadow Assistant Minister to the Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Assistant Minister for Youth. Being the youngest member of the opposition, he wants to pave the way for a new generation of emerging leaders in Queensland.
